Napping Princess Movie Review

A futuristic machine world.  A near-future Japan.  A princess/pirate girl.  An ordinary Japanese schoolgirl.  A doll that's alive.  A doll that's just a doll.  A sentient motorcycle and...a sentient motorcycle.  It's a tale of two worlds.  This is Napping Princess.

Napping Princess is the tale of two girls.  Ancient Heart is the princess of Heartland, a machine-heavy fantasy world where people live only to build machines.  Kokone Morikawa is a seemingly average schoolgirl living with her mechanic father in Japan.  Ancien is young girl who can use magic to bring machines to life and has moves that put Mirrors Edge's Faith to shame.  Kokone can...wear a miniskirt.

Napping Princess is the story of Princess Ancien...

...and schoolgirl Kokone.
Anyway, these two girls are connected.  Every time Kokone goes to sleep, she becomes Ancien (or that's what she initially thinks).  It's also worth noting that almost everyone in Kokone's world has a counterpart in Ancien's world.  For example, her father in Japan is a man called Peach (yes, a man) in Ancien's world.  The villain, however, has the same name in both worlds.  The sentient motorcycle (brought to life by Ancien) exists in both worlds.  The doll (which is alive in Ancien's world, but not alive in Kokone's) is in both worlds.  There are other characters who have equivalents, but saying who they are would be spoilers (more so than what I've already given).  All I'll say is that a story that crosses both worlds is being told in that dream (hopefully that's not too much).

The villain in Ancien's world...

...and his counterpart in Japan.
For the sake of preventing spoilers, I won't say what Kokone's "dream" represents, and hence, won't delve too deeply into the story.  As a basic summary, the villain wants a tablet that Kokone's father has and Kokone can't let him have it.  Obviously, there is more to this tablet than meets the eye, but I won't explain it (spoiler prevention).

This tablet is the source of all the trouble.
What I can say is that there is plenty of action.  Some chases here, some tension there, and even a few ass-whuppings sprinkled in.  There are mechs, a monster, and funny moments.  Heck, there's even some VERY brief fan-service.  In other word there's something for everyone.

Mechs and monsters...

...funny moments and tension...

...and some ass-whuppings.

There's even a discussion with Bruce Lee.
In the end, Napping Princess is an okay anime.  It doesn't always look good, but it has its moments.  The story isn't too difficult to piece to together.  Even the scenes that play out during the end credits have relevance to the story, so watch it all the way to the end.  Check it out.
