Barakamon Anime Review

Let's say you punch out an art critic.  What do you do?  Do you apologize?  Or do you go to an island full of hicks to find yourself?  This is Barakamon.


Our protagonist, Seishu Handa is a talented calligrapher with many awards and interviews under his belt.  Then, one art critic gives him his work is generic.  Well Sei wasn't going to let that slide, giving him a big, meaty fist in return.

...DON'T criticize his calligraphy.
The result is Sei gets sent to an island for some old fashioned country living.  This change of scenery isn't just meant as a vacation.  It's so he can get inspired to create calligraphy that feels less generic.

His living situation is pretty difficult.  He'll have to overcome obstacles too great for any man.  Old-school toilets, rats, psychotic nurses, butt pokes, and children will challenge Sei every step of the way.  In other words, there's nothing too urgent going on.

Is this toilet even safe to use?

Of course, he's not on this island alone.  The citizens are laidback country folks.  There adults are friendly and kind of helpful.  They kids are rambunctious and playful.  Chief among them is a little girl called Naru.  You can think of her like Yotsuba, only not as endearing.

...and this dangerous little psychopath.
The music is decent, with the opening and ending themes being excellent.  The rest of the music is standard slice-of-life fare.  The art style is just okay, but it has beautiful moments here and there.

Nothing says summer like fireworks.
Barakamon is a good summertime anime.  Everything looks, sounds, and feels like summer.  There are some decent laughs, a good opening theme, and a kickass ending theme.  Even though nothing really urgent is going on, you won't feel like you wasted your time.  Check it out.

Anime Hotties: Yaeko Minegasaki

Do you like young professional women?  Do you like women with purple hair?  Do you like Food Wars, but can't find an adult female to drool over?  Well, guess what?  She exists.  Her name is Yaeko Minegasaki. Yaeko Minegasaki isn't that hard to miss.  She's the first REAL threat Soma Yukihira faces in his quest to become a top-class chef.  She an urban planner and, as such, she's the devil. Soma is not impressed. She's a cool, mature woman.  She knows she's sexy and she's not afraid to use what she's got to get what she wants. A confident Minegasaki attempting to turn on the charm. Anime Cuties: The Girls Of Himouto! Umaru-chan

Himouto! Umaru-chan is an okay anime series with a decent amount of laugh and wacky characters.  Heck, some of them are even kind of cute.  In particular, you have the hot best friend, the creepy admirer, and the overconfident rival.  Respectively, Nina Ebina, Kirie Motoba, and Sylphynford Tachibana. Umaru and friends enjoy a day at the beach. Nana Ebina is the hot best friend.  She's content to live in Umaru's shadow and tries not to draw attention to herself.  She's a hick trying (successfully) to hide her country accent.  One trying she can't hide, however, is her DOA-caliber chest.  Her head tends to smoke when she's nervous, particularly when she's around Taihei. Nana's head smokes a lot... ...and please don't let her get near Taihei. Nana hides her accent well...until she eats good food. The difference between Nana and the others isn't hard to see here.
