Sword Art Online Season 1 Part 1 Anime Review

It's one of the most controversial anime of all time.  Not because it does anything dastardly or wrong, but because people can't decide whether or not it sucks.  Some really love it while others hate it, generally with very few people in the middle.  Let's Dive into Sword Art Online.

Sword Art Online is an anime where people get trapped inside a videogame, putting it squarely in what I call the .Hack genre.  It follow a guy called Kirito as he and thousands of other players are purposely trapped in a VR game by a sadistic game developer.  Anyone who dies in the game, dies in real life.  The only way for people to get free is for some (anyone really) to beat the game.  Kirito, as you may have guessed, has taken it upon himself to beat this game, by himself if possible.

Kirito, our protagonist.

Kirito is a badass loner.  Nothing can stand against him.  No one can beat him.  From big dragons, to asshole player-killers, to cute little rabbits, he fears nothing and no one.  Even Santa Claus takes an ass-whuppin' from Kirito.

A dragon is nothing to Kirito.
Player-killers are nothing but maggots to be crushed by him.
This cute little thing has no chance beating Kirito.
Santa Claus is coming...to kill!

How did he get so powerful?  He's what the other players a Beater, a beta tester and a cheater.  Naturally, this makes him disliked by many, hence he chooses to stay alone most of the time.  This is for the best, as he won't have to mask how strong he is and won't make dumb decisions as a result.  For example, he was traveling with a party and they all get trapped in a room after opening a fake treasure.  In an attempt to keep himself hidden, he let's the ENTIRE PARTY get killed by monsters before single-handedly killing everything and escaping.  Yeah...

Kirito's stupidity gets this girl and several others killed.

The only person who can really team up with him is a girl called Asuna.  It's obvious why this is the case and it actually happens.  Yep.  Kirito and Asuna eventually get married in the game and buy a house out in the woods, raising a strange girl (her identity would be spoilers) in the process.
Kirito's love interest, Asuna Yuki.

Other players are all divided into pointless cliques.  Others are talentless scrubs who resign themselves to living ordinary lives as shopkeepers, teachers, and fishermen.  You have suspicious people here, player-killers there, people that cry, and yes, cute females (ugly one's, too).
A combination character, a cute girl who is also crying character.

The mark of a suspicious character.

The way the final battle ends is pure grade-A bullshit.  I won't spoil it here.  All I'll say is that Kirito does something and it's never explained how he does it.  He just...does it.

So there it is.  Sword Art Online.  Is it the worst anime in history or the best?  Neither.  It's an okay anime.  Kirito's does do dumb stuff that almost breaks the show, but he's an alright protagonist.  Overall, season one sets a good tone for later episodes.  Check it out.
