Citrus Review

For Yuzu Aihara, life at an all-girls school is great.  She makes lots of friends, eats good food, the teachers don't suck, and she falls in love with her stepsister...huh?  What?  Yep.  It's one of those kind of manga.  This is Citrus.

When the manga starts, Yuzu Aihara is an outcast.  Her first day at school, she starts off completely on the wrong foot.  She violates the dress code, violates the makeup code, violates the hair code, and brings her cellphone, violating yet another rule.  This immediately puts her on the bad side of Mei, the student council president.  How does Mei show her displeasure?  By pretending to seduce Yuzu so she can take her phone.  Yeah...that makes sense.

Eventually, Yuzu gets home only to find out the her mother married Mei's father which makes Mei her stepsister.  From then on, craziness reigns.  She sees Mei kissing a teacher and outs them, forcing the teacher to leave the school.  Then, she gets kissed by Mei which causes her to fall in love with the girl.  After that, she gets expelled from school after Mei's grandfather (the school dean) catches them in a compromising situation.  Next, she gets the expulsion overturned after saving Mei's grandfather from dying of a heart attack.  Finally, she makes an enemy of Mei's childhood friend, who becomes her rival for Mei's heart.  All of that happens in the FIRST issue.  Needless to say, there is a lot going on and a lot more will happen as the manga continues.

Yuzu is an interesting character.  She says what she thinks needs to be said, often speaking without thinking about the embarrassment it may cause the other characters.  They usually thank her while essentially telling her to shut up at the same time.  It's funny more often than not.

As comedic as the manga tends to be, things get serious when it comes to the back and forth between Yuzu and Mei.  There's a lot of crying, fighting, and kissing that happens.  When the other characters get involved, it's humorous (just wait till you see what Yuzu's friend does to her while she's reading manga).  When it's just Yuzu and Mei, you can feel the frustration from both characters.

In the end, Citrus is a solid manga.  There's a nice balance of comedy and seriousness.  Each character's struggles are explored which leads a fully-realized cast.  It's a fun read.  Check it out.
