Blood Lad Anime Review

WTF happened here?  That's all I can say about this anime.  Just...WTF?  Well, here's Blood Lad.

The story follows a vampire named Staz.  He's not an ordinary vampire, though.  He's likes people and is enamored with Japanese people in particular.  Naturally, this means he's an otaku, with an extensive collection of anime, manga, and statuettes.  For him, the only thing that could be better is meeting an actual Japanese person.

Staz being an otaku.

His wish comes true, when a schoolgirl called Fuyumi comes stumbling from Japan into the monster world and is brought to his room by his minions.  He has a fangasm, asking her all sorts of questions.  Then, a dispute breaks out in his territory, so he goes out to solve it.  Little did he know that a monster creeped into his room as he was leaving and things...don't go well for Fuyumi.

Staz having a fangasm all over Fuyumi.

After settling the dispute he comes back to his room to see the monster there and Fuyumi gone.  The monster then cough this up...

Apparently, the human body only has four bones.

But never fear, because Fuyumi is fine, relatively speaking.

Yeah...okay

From then on, Staz vows to make her human again.  The is where the anime goes downhill...or does it.  On the whole, Blood Lad fun to watch and pretty funny, too.  Staz is badass, Fuyumi's hot, and all that good stuff.  So, what's the problem?

Don't know why, but this made me laugh.

It's apparent to anyone who's read the manga.  This anime is far too short and as a result, cuts out far too much.  They took a nine-issue manga (eight of them double-sized) and made a ten episode anime out of it.  TEN episodes.  It's quite the disappointment.  It makes you wonder what happened at the production studio that made it so they could out crank out ten episodes.  One a good note, they did cram in a lot of stuff (especially in the last four episodes) and tied things up rather neatly (emphasis on fairly).  Somehow, it didn't feel too rushed.

Yep, there's plenty of fanservice.

So, yes while Blood Lad is an entertaining manga, it's too trim for someone who's read the manga.  I was left wondering why the anime was so short and why it ended where it did.  If you haven't read the manga, check it out.  If you have read the manga, you're not missing anything.
