Tokyo Ghoul Review

It's a one of the biggest hits in manga today.  Legions of fans swear by it.  It's got violence, blood, and guts...and I couldn't care less.  That's right.  I don't like Tokyo Ghoul.  Well, let's dive into this overrated turd.

The first thing I don't like is that this is a manga where people called ghouls eat normal people.  Normally, this won't be so bad.  I've seen multiple things where people get eaten.  The difference between this series and something like Resident Evil or The Walking Dead is that the enemies aren't mindless zombies trying to satisfy a phantom hunger that can't possibly exist.  No, these guys actually know they are eating humans.  Yep.  It's a tale of good old-fashioned cannibalism.

This isn't done without a reason, however.  The BS explanation to why they have to eat people is because the body of ghouls can't digest anything but humans.  The taste of anything else causes them to have a violent gag reaction.  So they can't eat cooked food.  Fair enough, but they can't eat raw vegetables or raw meat from any other animal.  Only human meat will do for some strange reason.  So they can't just kill a raccoon or pick up some roadkill (unless it's a person) and eat it raw.  Also, for some strange reason, coffee can help stave their hunger because...who knows.

How far will they go to get  their human flesh fix.  They'll pull dead bodies out of ditches, dig up graves, or (not surprisingly) kill people to satisfy their hunger.  On a good note, they don't have to eat everyday, just once a month, but that doesn't help.  The whole concept is just disturbing.

Finally, the manga just isn't fun to read.  I read five or six (maybe seven, I forgot) volumes of this manga and only found boredom.  It just felt like a chore to read.  Maybe it's just because the concept doesn't connect with me, but I couldn't get into this manga.

It's not all bad, though.  The protagonist initially tries to avoid his fate of eating humans.  He even goes so far as to eat coffee sandwiches in a futile attempt to not eat people.  It shows he has some level of sanity about him.  Also, there is some decent action.  These things will make me give this manga another try eventually.  I want to see how far the protagonist will go to resist his hunger and the action isn't bad.  It makes me think the anime might be easier for me to stomach (pun not intended).

In the end, despite being an overrated, Tokyo Ghoul is actually a solid manga.  For me, the concept was too disgusting to think about and the non-action scenes made me yawn.  I might try it again (I will definitely give the anime a try, though), but as of now, I can't recommend this one.  Judging by how popular it is, I'm likely alone on this.  Read this one with caution.
