Food Wars

What a fun manga Food Wars is.  Seriously, there isn't much to dislike about it if anything.  It's just so silly, you have no choice but to love it.

The story follows a teenager called Yukihira Soma as get enrolled into a culinary school and cooks the competition under the table.  Yep, that's right.  This isn't some overpowered protagonist's epic quest to save the world.  This is some overpowered protagonist's epic quest to be a good cook.  It's quite a breath of fresh air compared to other shonen books and it's still just as fun.

Fans of shonen manga don't have to worry through.  There are lot's of laughs, tension, and waifus to go around.  Fan service is still present, but even this is presented in a fresh way.  It has everything a shonen series needs besides all the fighting and death, but you won't miss it.

Yukihira is a highly likeable character.  You just want to root for the guy.  He's dead set on being the best cook he can be and everything he does is to meet that goal.  Whether it's a big burly guy or a smoking hot girl (there's quite a few in this series) he shows no mercy in the kitchen.  He doesn't hate his opponents and usually tries to make friends once the oven mitts come off.

He also has a strong sense of justice and will put his neck on the line for a friend.  Nowhere is this no evident than when than when Tadokoro (one of the aforementioned hot girls) fails a challenge and is about to get expelled.  Yukihira stands up to a world-class chef to get her expulsion overturned.  It's not because he's trying to shack up with the girl, but because she truly belongs in the school.  That's a change of pace.  Usually, a shonen protagonist stands up for a girl because he likes her, but Yukihra is different like that.

Speaking of romance, this is something that is almost non-existent in this series.  None of that moe garbage taints this series.  That's a huge plus.  There are a few girls you can see Yukihira getting with in the future (namely Erina Nakiri or Megumi Tadokoro), but they've held off on that.  Once again, this is refreshing, because Yukihira is driven by success in the kitchen.  He's where he is because he wants to be there, not being forced into doing something detrimental because of a girl (looking at you, Dragons Rioting).  This makes him immensely more likeable than most shonen protagonists.

If one word summons up Food Wars, it's fresh.  It's nonviolent, but still intense take on the shonen themes we're use to.  It'd be a surprise if a fist fight or a romantic relationship doesn't happen eventually, but you won't miss them if they don't.  A part of Food Wars' charm is that those things aren't there.  It feels rewarding, even though he's not beating up the school bully, charming the hottest girl in school, or even trying to look cool.  The creators of this gem were firing on all cylinder.  This one is highly recommended.
