The Disappearance Of Nagato Yuki-chan Anime Review

The Haruhi series is an icon among anime.  Mystery, drama, comedy, dimension jumping, the series has it all.  On top of all that, it also has decent characters.  Yuki Nagato is one of them.  This is The Disappearance Of Nagato Yuki-chan.

Of all the characters in the Haruhi series, Yuki is my favorite, so it's nice to see a series focused on her.  In the original Haruhi series, Yuki is a robot/alien disguised as a bookworm teenage girl.  In this spinoff, however, she's a normal teenage girl.

Yuki's back and cuter than ever.
So, what does Yuki do as a normal girl?  Normal girl stuff like having crushes, worrying about grades, and going to hot springs, among other things.  She even has an identity crisis at some point, just like all teenagers do.

That looks like an identity crisis if I ever saw one.
Being a normal girl also means that Yuki will finally display a full range of emotions.  No longer a deadpan, monotone alien/robot (at least for most of the series), she gets happy, sad, hungry, and even cries.

Outside of this series, you would never see Yuki do this...

...and you certainly wouldn't see this.
All of your favorites from the main series return with changes.  Their defining characteristics (such as Itsuki being an esper) no longer apply here, but their personalities are largely unchanged.  Haruhi is still the loud-mouth bitch we all know and love.  The two characters who undergo the most serious changes (besides Yuki obviously) are Kyon and Asakura.

Everybody's favorite bossy bitch is back...

...as is everybody's favorite attempted murderer.
In the main series, Kyon was the unfortunate boy trying to pretend he didn't like Haruhi.  In this this series he's still an unfortunate boy, but he's trying to come to terms with his feelings for Yuki.  The feeling is mutual as Yuki likes him, too.

Yep, this is a thing in this series.
For those who have watched the main series, you'll see the it's Asakura has undergone the biggest change of them all.  No longer is she the homicidal bitch who tries to kill Kyon who instead winds up being killed by Yuki.  No, this time she and Yuki are best friends.  Never saw that coming.

Asakura is less crazy and stabby...
...and more of a friend and caretaker.
This series also deviates the main series by putting characters are put in situations they would never be in.  There is a ton more fan service in this series compared to the main one, which had virtually no fan service.  If you've ever wanted to see up Yuki's skirt or see Haruhi naked (just admit it), this is the series for you.

It's Haruhi as everyone has wanted to see her.
In the end, I thoroughly enjoyed this series.  It was nice to see Yuki in the lead and, while she not an alien robot here, she's was enjoyable to follow.  It was also nice to see more of Asukura, albeit with significant changes.
