Imagine you are a working-class man with a little sister who is the apple of everyone's eye. Everyone thinks she's hot stuff and only you know the truth of who she really is. This is Himouto! Umaru-chan.
Umaru is the center of attention wherever she goes. She's good at everything she does and never, ever loses. She she's a radiant beauty who makes teen boys drool and grown men cry. She's is the ultimate female.

Umaru as the public sees her. |
That is until she gets home. Then she transforms into a cloak-wearing, chip-eating, cola-swilling, video game-playing chibi character. That image she presents to the world is total BS and the only person in the world who knows it is her big brother, Taihei.

Umaru's true self... |

...and the only person who sees both sides of her, Taihei. |
Of course, Umaru also has a best friend, a rival, and a female admirer, none of whom even come close to learning her secret or are too stupid to connect the dots. There are some funny interactions here and there between of them, but Umaru's true identity is never in any real danger.

Characters include a big-breast hick who's head smokes for no reason... |
|
...a creepy, socially-awkward admirer... |
|
...and a star-eyed, cat-mouthed rival. |
The series doesn't have a real direction. It's just a bunch of misadventures and some wacky characters. Unfortunately, the series wasn't as funny as I'd hoped it would be. There were times when I asked myself, "Why doesn't Taihei just toss that bum out on the street?" In simpler terms, Umaru herself brings the series down. She's not a crappy or even unlikeable character. Just a little irritating, that's all.

Sometimes it's the simple things in life... |
All in all, Himouto! Umaru-chan isn't a bad anime. Just not as funny as it should have been. The funniest moments in the series came from Sylphynford (the cat-mouthed rival) and her constant failures to beat Umaru at anything. Equal parts, cute and funny, it's not bad, but it does nothing to stand out from the pack. Give it a try.
