No Matter How I Look It, It's Your Fault I'm Not Popular Review

What a manga this is.  You have an unlikeable protagonist doing unlikeable things, surrounded by unlikeable people.  What somehow, some way, you probably like this manga.

Tomoko Kuroki is the protagonist and there's no denying she's a loser, based on the way other characters act toward her.  On top of that, she can't talk to anyone.  Unpopularity doesn't run in the family, as her little brother (who also doesn't like her) is a stud.  Admittedly, this does make you feel for her.  She seems like an average person who's only problem is that she can't get a break.

Her solution to her unpopularity is to fix it herself.  Naturally, everything she does to make friends fails.  Most of the time these failures leave her worse off in terms of her standing with others.  Of course, it's not her fault that she isn't popular.  It's everybody else's fault, hence the title.

Tomoko has many misadventures, most of which are pretty darned funny.  From field tips to athletics to simply living everyday life, it's fascinating to see what she'll fail at next and how hard she'll fail.  Pranks go wrong, pants get wet, and beatings get delivered (though reader won't see the fights).

The saddest part is that for as much as Tomoko seems to suck, she's not as unpopular as she thinks.  She has a friend who goes to another school, makes friends with a popular kid, and a cousin who adores her (at least until the aforementioned pant-wetting happens).  She even has a rival who's jealous of her (yes, seriously).

The thing that may be lost on readers as they read these misadventures is that Tomoko isn't a bad person.  She may be a little rotten, she's no villainess out for world domination.  She has a few dirty habits (such as attempting to grope other girls) but she's not evil.  She's just an awkward teenager trying to find where she belongs.

Despite having too long of a title, this is a good manga.  Yes, the protagonist is unlikeable, but that's apart of her charm (kind of like Desert Punk, minus the gun).  It can be rewarding to see Tomoko get her just (or sometimes, not so just) desserts and fail hard.  Anyone who likes to laugh should check this one out.
